When I was a small child I was often plagued with the feeling of insecurity. Â I was timid and reserved. Â I was so afraid of making mistakes that I usually chose to stay quiet. Â My fear was humiliation. Â As much as I tried to avoid it, humiliation still showed up and took it’s course. Â It teased me in elementary school, taunted me in high school, and has reared its ugly head during adulthood.
Insecurity Overwhelmed Me
Back in High School, I can vividly remember that I needed to take a course to make up an English credit. Â That course was Speech/Debate class. Â One of my biggest fears at the time (and still is) was speaking publicly. Â Part of the curriculum was that every week I would have to create an original oral piece and deliver it to the entire class. Â Not only that, but I would have to be in this class for an entire year…gulp. Â My mind was bombarded by the what-ifs and my own confidence in my speaking abilities proved to be non-existent. Â Nevertheless, I gathered what little courage I had determinately set out to do what had to be done.
I can remember standing at the front of that class getting ready to deliver my speech and feeling like I would faint. Â My heart thundered in my chest and my first words were almost indecipherable. Â But I kept talking. Â I didn’t collapse. Â Before I knew it my words found a rhythm and just like that it was over.
All that I had feared had come and gone. Â I let out a huge sigh of relief as I returned to my seat. Â Every week continued like that. Â The more familiar I became with the class the more confidence I gained in my speeches. Â I began to open up about personal stories and even succeeded at a couple of debates. Â What struck me about that class, is that every one of us was nervous and lacked confidence in the beginning. Â It was familiarity that helped us gain confidence.
Insecurity Invades
I believe that is how it is in life today. Â We are insecure about the unknown and unfamiliarity of a situation. Â Not knowing the outcome not only leads to feelings of insecurity but may even plant a fear of failure. Â We then become paralyzed and doubtful about what others may think of us. Â Oh but isn’t that where our enemy wants us? Â Paralyzed with fear and immovable.
Satan doesn't want us stepping out, he wants us cowering in fear. Share on X
Fear and insecurity become kryptonite for our souls, and then it turns into us not only having to fight the enemy, but us fighting ourselves. Â If I may unravel that statement a little further by stating that you not only having a voice inside your own head telling you that you aren’t good enough, but there are also people around you will use your unfamiliarity against you. Â What an ingenious tactic used by satan himself.
Instead of there being a crowd around you to cheer you on, there could be one there waiting for you to make a mistake.
Instead of second chances, society chants that this is your only chance.
There is good news though, God says that your worth isn’t found in what people think of you or how they treat you. Â Your worth is sealed in Him.
“The Lord is for me, so I will have no fear. Â What can mere people do to me? Â Yes, the Lord is for me; he will help me. Â I will look in triumph at those who hate me.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in people.”
Psalms 118: 6-8 Â NLT
What if I told you that insecurity doesn’t have to control you any longer?
Refuting Insecurity
What if I told you that you have an identity in Christ that doesn’t carry shame or embarrassment?
The fact of the matter is that God offers us an identity that is appropriated and appointed by Him. Â When we fully acknowledge that fact our insecurities start to dissipate and we begin to cling onto promises made by Him within scriptures. Â Promises that set us apart and call us His own. Â Promises that help us to feel secure in who we are.
Once you begin to carry the promises of your identity in Christ your feelings of inferiority start to become recognized for what they are. Â They are nothing more than lies that have corroded your worth and potential.
Jacob was a man who led a life of victories and failures, and yet God renamed him Israel. Â A name with a promise and a future. Â Just like Jacob we also have a new name to look forward to that will be given to us when we are in the presence of the Lord (Rev 2:17).
I have no doubt that our new names will be beautiful and perfectly fitting, for we are beautiful and perfect in His eyes.
Don’t Let Insecurity Win
Perhaps you are one of God’s chosen who is drowning in waves of insecurity. Â Maybe you have been poisoned for years by the words of someone who was supposed to protect you. Â It could be that your lack is tied to humiliation in the past and torment from your childhood. Â Whatever the case may be, there are sacred promises given to us by the Lord Himself that we can lean on.
You are loved. Â Did you hear me?
Your identity is in Christ alone.
Not in your failures, your mistakes, or your shortcomings.
You are valued by a sovereign God who has taken your every sin and nailed it to the cross.
That means you are freed from having to accept the negative things that were instilled into you, and that you can carefully decide what you will allow to be spoken into your life in the future.
The assuredness in walking in alignment with the Spirit will give you the confidence you need to step out of your timid place and do what the Lord calls you to do.
Carefully determine what you are allowing to take root and cause insecurity. Are you believing lies or clinging to truth? Share on X
Verses to Stand On
Write these verses down. Â Place them somewhere where you can absorb them, meditate on them, and understand them for the truth they are.
- “But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. Â You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. Â As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. Â “Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Â Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.” Â 1 Peter 2: 9-10 Â NLT
- “And now I entrust you to God and the message of his grace that is able to build you up and give you an inheritance with all those he has set apart for himself.” Â Acts 20:32 NLT
- “So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.” Matthew 10:31 Â NLT
- “And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. Â And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. Â Having given them right standing, he gave them his glory. Â What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? Â If God is for us, who can ever be against us?” Â Romans 8:30-31 NLT
- “Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? Â No one–for God himself has given us right standing with himself. Â Who then will condemn us? Â No one–for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.” Â Romans 8: 33-34 Â NLT
- “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” Â 2 Timothy 1:7 NLT
- “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Â Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. Â I will strengthen you and help you. Â I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” Â Isaiah 41:10 Â NLT
- “So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. Â What can mere people do to me?” Â Hebrews 13:6

Natalie, this has so been me for all my life. I stepped out to be a ladies small group leader at my church about six years ago, and it still overwhelms me. I pray that, like you said, the familiarity will help me eventually. The fear still overwhelms me when I begin to talk and I literally can’t even recognize my voice. But the ladies are kinder to me than I am to myself! God Himself is kinder to me than I am to myself! The enemy can’t take away what the Lord has for us. Bless you sweet sister! I love this post!

I heard something in a study today that really hit home for me Donna and I think it will bless you as well. “Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9. Thank God when you are experiencing those moments of weakness for you truly know that what flows from you is the power of God. This study speaker is one whose hands shake when she speaks. God is good!

This really spoke to me because insecurity is something I have struggled with my whole life (and the public speaking part spoke to me too!! LOL)…It is something the enemy loves to use on me to get me to want to give things up. It causes constant comparison and always feeling like you don’t measure up. It causes me to not step out and try new things because I don’t feel confident enough. Thank you for sharing this because it will help so many people!
Natalie Venegas says
Awe Diane,
It’s hard to own up to our own weaknesses but God uses them doesn’t He? He shows us that He will equip us for what He calls us to do. That comforts me for it won’t be me, it will be Him working (and speaking) through me.

Thank you for this article! It is so important to build ourselves up and not to allow insecurity to impede God’s purpose in our lives.

Agreed Galina! The enemy would like nothing more than to diminish our purpose and exaggerate our insecurities. Thank you for commenting today!

What a great way to set your mind on Christ! It so good you can trace this back to feelings in high school. It’s been my experience that in those young moments we came to believe a lie about ourselves or what would happen to us and that has remained in the background of our minds. God has been so good to show me those lies so I can reject them and He shows me His truth that changes everything. Thanks for sharing such a relatable story!
